According to legends, there was a demon king, Mahishasura, who worshipped Lord Shiva and acquired powers. After becoming powerful he started harassing people and started calling himself, "GOD." In order to safeguard the world from his evil deeds, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva created Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasura in a battle. This war between the good and evil lasted for nine days and since then, the nine days "NAVRATRI" was celebrated with an enthusiastic spirit of joy.

It is also believed that worshipping Goddess Durga in the 9 days of Navratri and Vijayadasmi,  helps devotees to overcome the 10 evils of life;  Kama (Lust), Krodh (Anger), Lobh (Greed), Moh (Attachment), Ahankar (Ego), Darr (Fear), Irsha (Jealousy), Jada (Inertia), Nafrat (Hate) and Paschatap (Guilty).
