Kovalam – The grandeur of Kerala

A traveler’s soul always wants an excuse to travel. The same is with us.

In 2018, the Onam holiday has given us the chance to get an extended weekend. We packed our bags and head to Kovalam which is around 200 KM from Kochi.

Kovalam-this place needs no introduction. The pristine and Golden beaches, Poovar backwaters, Mangrove forests, hippy life, seafood is the beauty of this place.

We wanted a laid back holiday so we choose to stay a little away from the main place. We stayed at Chowara beach – An ideal Ayurvedic resort as we were more interested in some Ayurvedic sessions. Also, we heard that Chowara beach is a little secluded and not very common to locals and tourists. We reached at around 3 PM, checked into the hotel, and had an Ayurvedic meal. Yes, you heard me right! This resort offered some ayurvedic meals to detoxify. I was already in love with the food. After relaxing for some time, we head to Chowara beach which was 5 minutes walk from the resort. We took a long walk, admired the creation of nature, clicked some beautiful pictures, and came back to our resort for the dinner. This resort offered some outdoor sitting in the night for dinner. Enjoyed every bit of it.

On day two, we head for our Kovalam sightseeing which included some beautiful beaches like Lighthouse Beach, Kovalam beach, and Samudra beach, did some roadside shopping, and then head towards Trivandrum.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple was one of the first things on my list. I was mesmerized by the beauty of the architecture. After taking blessing from God, we head towards Napier Museum and Shangumugham beach. Spending some time on the beach, and enjoyed an authentic lunch we were back in the resort.

The resort's staff was very kind and arranged our evening tea at the beach. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset with our cup of tea in our hands. An absolutely unforgettable moment of my life.

On our third day, we were all ready to visit Poovar backwaters. It took us around one hour to reach this place. From there, we booked a private speed boat which took approx 3500/-. Poovar is an estuary, surrounded by small canals that take you to the golden beach, the cleanest beach of Kerala. Also, Poovar is quite famous among wildlife photographers. You will get some amazing pictures of birds.

Not to miss is the floating restaurants to have some mouth-watering food (little pricy). Our boat driver stopped at various places, the experience of drinking coconut water from a floating shop was unusual. We reached Golden beach after one hour of the boat ride. Golden Beach is definitely for those who are seeking rest, relaxation, uncrowded stretch of sand. A delight to the eyes is seeing salty water of the Arabian Sea meets the freshwater of the Neyyar river, thus forming a small estuary near the beach. The green and blue shades of water surrounded by palm trees was a vision to hold.

For me, this was a quintessential experience. No wonder, why Kerala is known as God’s own country!  We returned to our resort by evening. Kept our evening free, enjoyed some time lounging at the pool of the resort. The staff arranged a beautiful candlelight dinner. This way we ended our trip.

Kovalam trip is always close to my heart because this was our first beach trip in India. I was never a fan of beaches, mountains have always been my priority. But Kovalam has definitely changed my perception.

This place will always be etched in memories forever.

Do plan your trip to Kovalam and share your experiences with us. We will love to hear from you!

Happy Travelling!
